Shirvan National Park: Gazelle Safari an Hour and a Half from Baku
Shirvan protects roughly 54,000 hectares of semi-desert and coastal lagoon on the Caspian, about 100 km south of Baku. It holds the main surviving population of goitered gazelle in Azerbaijan — an animal that came close to disappearing here in the 20th century.
What you actually see
The gazelles are the reason most people come, and sightings are genuinely reliable — herds move across open ground and are visible from the park tracks rather than requiring a long stalk. Jackals, wolves and tortoises share the same terrain.
This is semi-desert, not savanna: low salt-tolerant scrub, sand ridges and shallow water. Expect flat light and long views rather than dramatic scenery.
Birds and timing
The coastal lagoons sit on a migration corridor. Flamingos, pelicans, herons and large numbers of waterfowl pass through in spring and autumn, which is when the park is at its most rewarding for anyone carrying binoculars.
