Nature and Wildlife in Azerbaijan: Four Very Different Landscapes
For a country the size of Portugal, Azerbaijan carries an unusual spread of climate zones — semi-desert, subtropical rainforest, alpine meadow and Caspian wetland all sit within a few hours of each other, and each holds species the others do not.
Where the wildlife actually is
Shirvan National Park, an hour and a half south of Baku, holds the country's main goitered gazelle population along with jackals, wolves and tortoises, in semi-desert and coastal lagoon. Sightings there are reliable rather than lucky.
Hirkan in the far south protects relict Hyrcanian forest that survived the Ice Ages — dense, ancient woodland holding tree species lost from the rest of Europe, and the remaining habitat of the Caucasian leopard.
Birds and the Caspian corridor
Azerbaijan sits on a major migration flyway. The wetlands and lagoons along the Caspian take flamingos, pelicans, herons and large numbers of waterfowl on passage, concentrated in spring and autumn rather than spread across the year.
If birds are the point of the trip, aim for March–May or September–November and build the route around Shirvan and the southern wetlands. Outside those windows the parks are still worth visiting, but for the mammals and the landscape rather than the numbers of birds.
