Gobustan and the Mud Volcanoes: a Complete Guide from Baku

What Gobustan actually is
Gobustan National Park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2007, and the reason is written on the rocks. The petroglyphs cover hunting scenes, reed boats, dancing figures and animals that no longer live anywhere near the Caspian — a record of how the climate and the people here changed across forty millennia.
The site also holds a Roman inscription from the 1st century AD, left by a centurion of Legio XII Fulminata. It is the easternmost Roman inscription ever found, and it sits about an hour from a modern capital city.
The mud volcanoes are a separate stop
The volcanoes are not inside the petroglyph reserve — they are a further drive across rough track, which is why some cheaper trips quietly skip them. Check the itinerary before booking. The cones are cold, not hot: they push out grey mineral mud, methane and, occasionally, a slow bubble that pops loudly enough to make people jump.
There are around 350 of them in Azerbaijan. The field usually visited from Baku sits near Dashgil, and the last stretch of road normally needs a higher vehicle in wet weather.
