Lankaran and Astara: Azerbaijan's Subtropical South
Four hours south of Baku the climate changes completely. The semi-desert gives way to tea plantations, citrus and rice, and the Talysh mountains rise straight out of humid forest. This is the wettest corner of the country and looks nothing like the rest of it.
Hirkan and the relict forest
The Hyrcanian forests along the Caspian's southern shore are relicts that survived the Ice Ages, holding tree species that vanished from the rest of Europe. They were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2019, and Hirkan National Park protects the Azerbaijani section.
Ironwood, Persian oak and chestnut-leaved oak grow here alongside the Caucasian leopard's remaining habitat. The forest is dense and genuinely old — not replanted.
Tea, and a spring that burns
Lankaran is Azerbaijan's tea region; plantations climb the hillsides and local production is easy to visit. The town also has thermal springs used for treatment.
Near Astara, at the Iranian border, Yanar Bulag is a tap of spring water carrying enough dissolved methane that a match held to the flow sets the water alight while it keeps running. It is a short stop but the one everyone remembers.
