How Many Days Do You Need in Azerbaijan?
The honest answer is five. Three is enough to see Baku and touch one region; five lets you do the capital properly and take two real trips out of it; beyond seven you are into diminishing returns unless you are heading for the high mountains.
What each length actually covers
Three days: Baku itself — the walled Old City, the modern quarter, the boulevard — plus one day trip. Make it Gobustan with the mud volcanoes, or Ateshgah with Yanar Dag, both around half a day, so you can fit two short ones instead.
Five days: Baku, two day trips from the shortlist, and one long day west to Sheki or north to Guba and Khinalug. This is the version most people should book. Seven days: the same plus an overnight in the regions, which converts the hardest day trip into a comfortable two-day loop.
Where extra days stop helping
Past seven days, the constraint is not what there is to see — it is that everything radiates from Baku along three corridors and the fourth day of driving starts to repeat the third. Ten days makes sense if you want two corridors done slowly, or you are combining Azerbaijan with Georgia overland.
The reverse problem is more common: two days is genuinely tight. It covers Baku and one half-day trip, and anything past Shamakhi is out of reach. If that is all the time you have, spend it in the capital and on the Absheron peninsula rather than trying to reach Sheki.
