Planning a Multi-Day Route Through Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan is compact on a map and slower on the ground: mountain roads, not motorways. Almost everything radiates from Baku along three corridors — north to the high Caucasus, west to Sheki, south to the subtropics — and the main planning question is which of them deserve an overnight.
The three corridors
North: Guba, Khinalug and Shahdag. Two days is the honest minimum, because Khinalug is 65 km of switchbacks past Guba and rushing it means arriving and turning around. West: Shamakhi, Lahij, Gabala, Sheki, Basqal — the richest corridor, and the one that most rewards two or three nights. South: Lankaran, Astara, Hirkan — the least visited and the most different, worth two days.
Trying to combine north and south in the same trip means backtracking through Baku, so most routes pick two of the three.
What each length gets you
Two days: Baku plus one corridor, shallowly. Three days: Baku, plus Sheki with an overnight, plus the stops on the way. Five days: two corridors properly, or one corridor plus real time in the mountains. Seven days: all three, or two with time to stop moving.
The realistic constraint is driving. Sheki alone is 4.5 hours each way; Khinalug is 3 hours plus a mountain road. Building a route that does not eat itself in transfers is the whole skill, and the options below are structured around exactly that.
