The useful question about a day trip is not what it includes but how much of it happens in the car. Below, each route is listed with its real duration, because the difference between an eight-hour and a fifteen-hour day changes what you should book.
Sorted by how long the day really is
Around 8 hours: the Shirvan National Park safari, the Baku top-attractions circuit, the Balakhani cooking day. Around 11–12 hours: Shamakhi with Lahij and Gabala, Guba with Khinalug, Shahdag, Basqal. Around 12–13 hours: Lankaran and Astara. Around 14–15 hours: Sheki.
Those last figures are door to door. A fifteen-hour Sheki day typically means leaving around 06:00 and returning close to 21:00, with roughly nine of those hours spent driving.
When to convert a day trip into an overnight
If the driving is more than half the day, the trip is a candidate for an overnight instead. Sheki is the clearest case: as a day trip it works, but as an overnight it stops being an endurance exercise and lets you see the town in evening light and early morning, when it is empty.
Khinalug is the second case, for a different reason — the mountain road is slow, and arriving with two hours of daylight left is very different from arriving with six. If your schedule has the room, check the multi-day options.
