The Best Time to Visit Azerbaijan Depends on What You Came For
The short answer is April to June and September to October. The longer answer is that Azerbaijan holds nine of the world's climate zones, so "best" changes depending on whether you are heading for the mountains, the coast or the semi-desert.
The two prime windows
April to June: mountain roads reopen, the semi-desert briefly greens, bird migration peaks along the Caspian, and Baku is warm without being hot. May is arguably the single best month — Khinalug is reachable again while the peaks are still snow-capped.
September to October: the summer heat breaks, harvest season fills the roadside stalls, and the forests around Sheki, Lahij and Gabala turn. October is the strongest month for the western route. Both windows avoid the two problems of the calendar — closed mountain roads and unbearable midday heat.
When the off-seasons are actually better
Winter wins for two specific things: skiing at Shahdag from late December, and the fire sites. Cold, dense air makes Yanar Dag stand taller than at any other time of year, and the early sunset means the city light displays start before dinner.
Summer is worth it only if you go up. Baku above 35 °C with Caspian humidity is hard work at midday, but Shahdag, Khinalug and Gabala sit ten to fifteen degrees cooler and are at their best from June. Plan altitude in July, not open ground.
