The modern set pieces
The Flame Towers, finished in 2012, are three tapered buildings whose facades carry LED screens; after dark they burn, pour water and wave flags in sequence. From Highland Park above them you get the standard postcard view down over the bay.
The Heydar Aliyev Center, Zaha Hadid's building from the same year, is the other fixed stop — a white surface with no straight lines and no visible columns. It photographs better in person than in pictures, which is unusual.
The boulevard and the oil-boom streets
The Caspian promenade runs several kilometres along the water and was laid out in 1909, when oil money was rebuilding the city. Walking a stretch of it is the easiest way to feel the scale of the bay.
Inland, Nizami Street and Fountain Square are lined with mansions built by oil barons who hired European architects — which is why a Caspian port has streets that look like Riga or Vienna. The Carpet Museum, shaped like a rolled carpet, sits at the boulevard's western end.
