Icherisheher: Walking Baku's Walled Old City
Twenty-two hectares inside a 12th-century wall, still lived in, sitting directly above the modern city's metro. Icherisheher went onto the UNESCO list in 2000 and remains the densest concentration of history in Azerbaijan — most of it walkable in three hours.
The Maiden Tower, and why nobody agrees about it
The eight-storey stone cylinder on the seaward side is the city's emblem and its biggest unsolved question. Dating estimates run from the 6th century BC to the 12th century AD. It has been read as a fire temple, an observatory, a fortress and a Zoroastrian dakhma — the buttress on its east side fits none of these explanations cleanly.
The climb is worth it: the roof gives the clearest single view of how the old town, the bay and the Flame Towers stack up against each other.
The Shirvanshahs' Palace
Built mostly in the 15th century, the palace complex is not one building but a sequence stepping down the hillside: the residence, the divankhana courtroom, the burial vault, a mosque, a bathhouse. The stone carving on the divankhana portal is the finest medieval stonework in the country.
Allow at least an hour here if you want to read the inscriptions rather than photograph them.
