The Absheron Peninsula: Everything Within an Hour of Baku
Baku sits on a peninsula that pushes into the Caspian, and almost everything worth a half-day is on it. Fire sites, medieval defensive towers, a hillside mosque above the bay and an open-air village museum — none of it more than an hour from the city centre.
The fire sites and the towers
Ateshgah at Surakhani and the burning hillside at Yanar Dag are the peninsula's headline stops and are covered in their own guide. Less visited are the medieval towers at Mardakan — a round one and a square one, both built as refuges during raids, both climbable.
Gala, further east, is an open-air museum reconstructing peninsula village life across several centuries, with dwellings, tools and a small collection of carved stones.
Bibi-Heybat and the coastal edge
Bibi-Heybat mosque stands on the cliff south of the bay. The original 13th-century building was destroyed in 1936; what stands now was rebuilt in the 1990s to the old plan. The site matters as much for the view back across the bay towards the city as for the architecture.
The peninsula also carries the marks of the oil industry — nodding donkeys in fields, salt lakes, and the rusted scaffolding of a century of extraction. It is not conventionally pretty, but it explains the country better than the boulevard does.
