Baku at Night: Where the City Actually Looks Different After Dark
Baku is one of the few cities where the evening version is not just the day version with lights on. The Flame Towers run an animated LED sequence, the medieval walls are floodlit from below, and the bay reflects the whole skyline. Two hours is enough to see it properly.
The Flame Towers sequence
The three towers are covered in LED panels that run a looping display: flames climbing the buildings, then water pouring down them, then a waving Azerbaijani flag. The cycle repeats through the evening.
The best vantage point is Highland Park, directly above, where you see the towers and the bay in the same frame. This is also where the sequence reads as intended — from street level directly beneath them, the scale is lost.
Timing it right
The useful window is the twenty minutes after sunset, when there is still colour in the sky and the lights are already on. Full darkness gives strong contrast but flat black skies, which matters if you are shooting.
Sunset moves a lot across the year here — around 17:15 in December, close to 20:30 in June — so evening departures shift with the season. Check the start time against the date rather than assuming.
