Shahdag: Azerbaijan's Mountain Resort, Season by Season
Shahdag Mountain Resort sits at roughly 1,435–2,550 m in the Greater Caucasus, under a peak of 4,243 m, about three hours from Baku. It is the country's main ski area in winter and, less obviously, one of its best summer escapes when the city passes 35 °C.
Winter: the ski season
Snow generally holds from late December into March, supported by artificial snowmaking. The runs cover beginner through advanced, and equipment rental and instruction are available on site, which makes it workable as a day trip for people who have never skied.
Day-trippers should note the drive: three hours each way means an early start if you want a useful amount of time on the mountain.
Summer: cable cars and meadows
Outside the ski season the lifts keep running for sightseeing, taking you above the treeline in a few minutes for views across the Caucasus range. Temperatures at altitude sit well below Baku's, which is the real reason locals go up in July and August.
