Guba and Khinalug: Apple Orchards, a Jewish Town and a Village at 2,350 m
Guba lies 168 km north of Baku, surrounded by apple orchards and split by the Qudyal river. On the far bank sits one of the few all-Jewish towns outside Israel. From there a mountain road climbs to Khinalug, where roughly two thousand people speak a language spoken nowhere else.
Khinalug: a language island at 2,350 metres
Khinalug sits at about 2,350 m and is one of the highest continuously inhabited villages in the Caucasus. Its people speak Khinalug, a Northeast Caucasian language with no close relatives — not Azerbaijani, not Lezgian, not anything spoken in the next valley. Isolation kept it alive.
The houses are stacked so that one roof serves as the next house's yard. Sheep still move up to summer pasture and back on foot. The road up is 65 km of switchbacks and, in poor weather, genuinely wants a high-clearance vehicle.
Red Village and the orchards
Across the river from Guba, Qırmızı Qəsəbə — Red Village — has been home to Mountain Jews for centuries and is often described as the only surviving all-Jewish town outside Israel. Its synagogues are still in use.
Guba itself is apple country: the orchards supply much of the national crop, and the local hamam and carpet workshops are worth the stop if the schedule allows.
