Mountain Tours in Azerbaijan: Where the Caucasus Is Actually Reachable
The Greater Caucasus runs along Azerbaijan's northern border and reaches 4,466 m at Bazarduzu. Most of it is not casually accessible, but a handful of routes get you genuinely high without technical climbing — and all of them start from Baku.
How high you can actually get in a day
Khinalug at roughly 2,350 m is the highest inhabited point you can drive to from Baku in a day, though it is a long one. Shahdag's cable cars take you above the treeline with no walking involved. Lahij at around 1,200 m is the gentlest option and sits on the western route.
The Khizi hills near the Candy Cane mountains are low but visually dramatic, and they work as a half-day when the higher roads are closed.
Season is not optional here
Mountain roads in Azerbaijan close or become unreliable with snow, and the Khinalug road is the clearest example — it is a 65 km climb of switchbacks past Guba, and in winter it can be shut with little warning. May to October is the safe window for anything above 2,000 m.
The reverse is also true: Shahdag in July is a genuine escape when Baku is above 35 °C, and alpine meadows at that altitude are at their best from June. Plan the altitude around the month rather than the other way round.
