Azerbaijan in Autumn: Harvest Season in the Mountains
September and October are the year's second strong window, and by some measures the first. The summer heat has broken, the mountain roads are still open, the forests around Sheki and Gabala turn, and the country is in the middle of its harvest.
The harvest and what comes with it
Autumn is pomegranate season, and Azerbaijan takes pomegranates seriously — Goychay holds an annual festival around the end of October. Persimmons, quince, walnuts, figs and grapes come in at the same time, and roadside stalls on the western and northern routes are at their best.
Guba's apple harvest falls in this window too. If food is part of why you travel, the difference between an October and a February trip through the regions is substantial.
Weather and the closing window
September still carries summer warmth without the peak; October is comfortable everywhere and is probably the single best month for the western route. Deciduous forest around Lahij, Gabala and Sheki turns properly, which the rest of the country — mostly scrub and semi-desert — cannot offer.
November is the transition. The lowlands stay fine, but the high mountain roads become unreliable towards the end of the month, so Khinalug and Shahdag start to carry the same caveats as winter. Book the high altitude early in the season and leave the cities for later.
