Getting an Azerbaijan Tourist Visa: How the System Works
Most visitors to Azerbaijan use the ASAN Visa system — an online application handled entirely through the official government portal, with no embassy visit and no paperwork sent by post. The practical questions are whether you need one at all, and how long to leave for it.
Check your category first
Three groups exist: nationals who need no visa at all, nationals eligible for the electronic visa, and nationals who must apply through an embassy. Citizens of several neighbouring and CIS countries fall into the first group, and a large list of others into the second.
Rules change, and they change without much notice. Verify your own nationality on the official portal at evisa.gov.az before assuming anything, including anything written here. Do not rely on a forum post or an old blog.
Applying, and how long to allow
The application is a form, a passport scan and a card payment. Standard processing takes a few working days; an urgent option returns the visa considerably faster for a higher fee. The visa arrives as a PDF by email — print it or keep it accessible offline, because you may be asked for it at check-in as well as at the border.
Two things catch people out. First, the e-visa is usually single entry with a fixed validity, so a side trip out of the country and back needs planning. Second, your passport must have enough remaining validity — check the current requirement on the portal rather than assuming six months.
