Every UNESCO Site in Azerbaijan, and How to Reach It
Azerbaijan holds four World Heritage inscriptions and a longer list of intangible cultural heritage entries. Three of the four sit within a day of Baku, which is unusual: most countries make you choose.
The four World Heritage sites
Icherisheher, the walled city of Baku with the Maiden Tower and the Shirvanshahs' Palace, inscribed in 2000. Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape, inscribed 2007 for its 6,000-plus petroglyphs. The Historic Centre of Sheki with the Khan's Palace, inscribed 2019. And the Hyrcanian Forests, inscribed 2019 as a natural site shared with Iran, protected in Azerbaijan through Hirkan National Park near Lankaran.
Three are reachable as day trips from Baku. The Hyrcanian forests are the exception at four hours south, and they reward an overnight.
The intangible heritage list
This is where Azerbaijan is unusually rich: mugham music, ashiq performance, the art of the kelagayi silk headscarf, carpet weaving, the copper craft of Lahij, dolma-making, the tar instrument and Novruz among them.
These are practices rather than places, so seeing them means going where they are made or performed — the Basqal workshops for kelagayi, Lahij for copper, a family kitchen for dolma. The tours below are the ones that actually reach a listed site or a living craft rather than a display case.
