Shamakhi, Lahij and Gabala: the Classic Day West of Baku
The road west from Baku strings together three very different places: a town that was capital of a medieval state, a mountain village where copper is still hammered by hand, and a resort area of waterfalls and cable cars. Most people do all three in one long day.
Shamakhi: 122 km, and older than it looks
Shamakhi was the capital of the Shirvanshah state and sat on the Silk Road. Its Juma Mosque traces its foundation to 743 AD, making it among the oldest in the Caucasus — earthquakes have flattened it repeatedly and it has been rebuilt each time.
A few kilometres away, the Diri Baba Mausoleum from 1402 is built into the face of a cliff, half-tucked into the rock. It is small and easy to underestimate from the road.
Lahij and Gabala
Lahij sits at around 1,200 m on a cobbled street that has not changed shape in centuries. Coppersmithing here is a living craft, not a demonstration — the workshops open onto the street and you hear them before you see them. The village has its own Tat dialect.
Gabala, further on, is the resort end of the route: the Tufandag cable car, the Seven Beauties waterfall and Nohur Lake. Doing Shamakhi, Lahij and Gabala properly is about eleven to twelve hours door to door.
