Basqal: Silk Headscarves, Stone Lanes and the Craft UNESCO Listed
Basqal sits in the Ismayilli highlands about 170 km from Baku, a stone-built settlement that made its name from one product: the kelagayi, a square silk headscarf dyed and block-printed by hand. UNESCO added the craft to its intangible heritage list in 2014.
How a kelagayi is made
The process starts with raw silk woven into a plain square, then boiled and washed. Patterns are applied with carved wooden blocks dipped in wax, which resists the dye; the cloth is dyed, the wax removed, and the block reapplied for each additional colour.
The dyes are traditionally natural — madder root, walnut husk, saffron, pomegranate skin. Colour once carried meaning: which shade a woman wore signalled age, region and occasion, so the scarf was a form of speech as much as clothing.
The village and its surroundings
Basqal is built in stone on a slope, with narrow lanes, a historic bath and water channels that still run. It is small enough to walk in an hour, and quiet in a way the bigger stops on the western route are not.
