Azerbaijan with Children: What Works and What to Skip
The deciding factor with children here is not the sites, which are unusually good for them — fire coming out of a hillside sells itself — but the driving. Azerbaijan's day trips range from two hours to fifteen, and that range is the whole planning problem.
What genuinely holds a child's attention
Yanar Dag is a hillside on fire; no explanation needed. The mud volcanoes bubble, smell faintly of sulphur and occasionally pop. Shirvan National Park has gazelle herds visible from the vehicle. The Maiden Tower can be climbed. A cooking session in Balakhani gives them something to do with their hands rather than something to look at.
What tends not to land: long museum interiors, the palace inscriptions, and anything requiring stillness after a two-hour drive.
Drive times are the real constraint
Anything under five hours total is comfortable: Ateshgah with Yanar Dag, Gobustan, Candy Cane, the Old City walk, the city tour. Around eight hours is manageable for older children: Shirvan safari, the Balakhani cooking day.
Sheki at fourteen to fifteen hours and Khinalug's mountain road are not family day trips, whatever the booking page says. If those matter to you, do them as an overnight. For young children, the private format is worth the difference — you leave when they are ready and stop when they need to.
